Caroni Swamp Bird List

The nature guide/boatman guided us through the channels of Caroni Swamp on the western coast of Trinidad and pointed out interesting wildlife. The list also includes birds we saw at a freshwater marsh on the way to Caroni.

• Cattle egret
• Striated heron, also called green-backed heron
• Black-crowned night-heron
• Yellow-crowned night-heron
• Scarlet ibis -- the famous bird of Caroni
• Black vulture

• Clapper rail (barely visible in the shadow)
• Southern lapwing
• Semipalmated plover
• Lesser yellowlegs
• Willet
• Spotted sandpiper
• Whimbrel
• Common ground-dove

• Gray-fronted dove
• Orange-winged parrot
• Squirrel cuckoo
• Smooth-billed ani
